Winter Prep: Optimizing Your Swarm Traps in Minnesota

Even with snow on the ground, now is a great time to think about swarm season. Planning and preparation during these quiet winter months will make a big difference when spring arrives.

Why Prepare Swarm Traps Now?

While active bee season feels far away, taking action now has several advantages:

  • Time to Source Materials: You have plenty of time to gather and prepare your swarm traps without the pressure of an imminent swarm. This includes cleaning and repairing existing traps or building new ones.
  • Strategic Placement: Winter allows you to scout locations and place your swarm traps in ideal spots before bees become active. Consider areas with good sun exposure and protection from harsh winds.
  • Early Bird Gets the Swarm: By having your traps ready early, you increase your chances of capturing the first swarms of the season.

Optimizing Your Swarm Traps

Here are a few tips to maximize the effectiveness of your swarm traps:

  • Location, Location, Location: Place traps 10-15 feet off the ground in a partially shaded area, ideally facing southeast. Scout locations now to identify promising spots.
  • Enticement is Key: Use a swarm lure or lemongrass essential oil to attract bees. Reapply every few weeks to maintain its effectiveness.
  • Trap Size Matters: A box with a volume of 40-50 liters is ideal. Ensure the entrance is appropriately sized (around 5-6 inches).
  • Old Comb: Include a frame or two of old, dark comb in the trap. The scent of old comb is highly attractive to swarms.
  • Ventilation: Good ventilation is crucial to prevent the trap from becoming too hot or humid. Place a penny between your upper box and your inner cover to create the perfect amount of ventilation.
